Instant view: RIM reports quarterly loss but cash pile grows

(Reuters) - Research In Motion Ltd reported a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss on Thursday and the struggling BlackBerry maker managed to increase its cash pile in the run-up to the launch of its make-or-break line of next generation devices.

Having sufficient cash on hand is seen as crucial to a successful launch of RIM's line of revamped smartphones that will run on its new BlackBerry 10, or BB10, operating system.

The company has staked its future on BB10. A one-time smartphone pioneer, RIM has watched the BlackBerry lose market share in recent years to the likes of Apple Inc's iPhone and Samsung Electronics Co's Galaxy.

COMMENTARY:

PETER MISEK, ANALYST, JEFFERIES

"It's very impressive. I didn't expect they could execute on the business given the models they have in the market, but they obviously did really well in emerging markets. They really, really did, so good for them, but unfortunately they're still five months away from their BB10 devices and we think that's probably too late for them. Nothing's really changed in our fundamental view but this was obviously excellent management execution."

"They targeted emerging markets where an iPhone or an Android device won't work, where the infrastructure can't handle the load, and a BlackBerry is a much better way of connecting to the system. They've been very intelligent about going after markets where the competition wasn't as strong."

PAUL TAYLOR, CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER OF FUNDAMENTAL EQUITIES, BMO ASSET MANAGEMENT, TORONTO

"The fact that (cash) was up, that they're not in a cash burn situation, and with the right-sizing of the workforce, presumably some of their expenses are being run more in line with their likely future reduced revenues. So from a financial performance perspective, it's probably a good outcome in the short term."

SHAW WU, ANALYST, STERNE AGEE

"Much better than feared, for sure. We had thought there was a chance this could happen, because everyone had been so negative and expecting a disaster.

"It's still bad, but it's a much smaller disaster than expected. These stocks all trade on expectations. Expectations were really low, and they were able to beat that."

"They shipped more than a million better than expected. They also lost a lot less money than expected, and the cash balance, even though they lost money, they were able to grow it slightly."

Dashboard beta leaks new Xbox Music Pass Cloud playlists and early pricing revealed

Appearing closely after Zune's end, we've been sent these images of what Microsoft's likely to offer in Xbox Music. Matching those early rumors, it looks like some cloud-linked features will make an appearance in the form of synchronized playlists, while the service will offer a free half-month trial alongside paid subscriptions. Prices are currently set at £8.99 ($15) for a month, while £89.90 ($146) will offer a year's unlimited access to "millions" of tracks, to stream and download across Xbox, Windows, and Windows Phone. The system's UI seems to borrow its looks from Windows' Metro tile-based style, with a very similar keyboard that appears to be navigable from your Xbox controller. Take a tour of the gallery below and expect to hear more specifics ahead of the big Windows 8 launch next month.

(AP Photo/Bebeto Matthews)

(AP) ? After an hour of fielding questions about Syria, sanctions and nuclear weapons, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had enough. Now, he said, it was his turn to choose the topic ? his "new order" which will inevitably replace the current era of what he called U.S. bullying.

Continuing his hectic pace of media appearances and diplomatic meetings, Ahmadinejad presented an air of boredom when it came to the hot topic on everyone's mind ? Iran's nuclear program and the possibility of impending war. Whether it was feigned or sincere, he said he would much rather be talking about his vision of what the next world order might be.

Conveniently, it would be an order in which the U.S. and the traditional powers play a smaller role and every country has equal standing (though the state of Israel, he often predicts, will soon become a historical footnote).

"God willing, a new order will come and will do away with ... everything that distances us," Ahmadinejad told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday, speaking through a translator. "All of the animosity, all of the lack of sincerity will come to an end. It will institute fairness and justice."

He said the world was losing patience with the current state of affairs.

"Now even elementary school kids throughout the world have understood that the United States government is following an international policy of bullying," he said. "I do believe the system of empires has reached the end of the road. The world can no longer see an emperor commanding it."

The interview was held on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly ? Ahmadinejad's last as president of Iran. He was to address the assembly Wednesday morning.

He also discussed solutions for the Syrian civil war, dismissed the question of Iran's nuclear ambition and claimed that despite Western sanctions his country is better off than it was when he took office in 2005.

Earlier Tuesday, President Barack Obama warned Iran that time is running out to resolve the dispute over its nuclear program. In a speech to the General Assembly, Obama said the United States could not tolerate an Iran with atomic weapons.

Ahmadinejad would not respond directly to the president's remarks, saying he did not want to influence the U.S. presidential election in November.

But he argued that the international outcry over Iran's nuclear enrichment program was just an excuse by the West to dominate his country. He claimed that the United States has never accepted Iran's choice of government after the 1979 Islamic revolution.

"Everyone is aware the nuclear issue is the imposition of the will of the United States," he said. "I see the nuclear issue as a non-issue. It has become a form of one-upmanship."

Ahmadinejad said he favored more dialogue, even though negotiations with world powers remain stalled after three rounds of high-level meetings since April.

He said some world leaders have suggested to him that Iran would be better off holding nuclear talks only with the United States.

"Of course I am not dismissing such talks," he said, asked if he were open to discussions with the winner of the American presidential election.

Israeli leaders, however, are still openly contemplating military action again Iranian nuclear facilities, dismissing diplomacy as a dead end. Israel and many in the West suspect that Iran is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, and cite its failure to cooperate fully with nuclear inspectors. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Ahmadinejad also proposed forming a new group of 10 or 11 countries to work to end the 18-month Syrian civil war. Representatives of nations in the Middle East and elsewhere would meet in New York "very soon," he said.

Critics have accused Tehran of giving support to Syrian President Bashar Assad in carrying out massacres and other human rights violations in an attempt to crush the uprising against his rule. Activists say nearly 30,000 people have died.

Ahmadinejad said the so-called contact group hopes to get the Syrian government and opposition to sit across from each other.

"I will do everything in my power to create stability, peace and understanding in Syria," Ahmadinejad said.

Earlier this month, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi announced the formation of a four-member contact group with Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. But Saudi Arabia so far has not participated.

Ahmadinejad denied Iranian involvement in plotting attacks on Israelis abroad, despite arrests and accusations by police in various countries. He also vehemently disputed the U.S. claim that Iranian agents played a role in a foiled plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States last year.

Ahmadinejad will leave office next June after serving two four-year terms. He threw out numbers and statistics during the interview to show that Iran's economy and the lives of average Iranians have improved under his watch. Since his 2005 election, he claimed, Iran went from being the world's 22nd-largest economy to the 17th-largest; non-petroleum related exports increased sevenfold; and the basic production of goods has doubled. Median income increased by $4,000, he said.

It was not possible to immediately verify his figures.

"Today's conditions in Iran are completely different to where they were seven years ago in the economy, in technical achievement, in scientific know-how," Ahmadinejad said. "All of these achievements, though, have been reached under conditions in which we were brought under heavy sanctions."

Iran has called for the U.S. and its European allies to ease the sanctions that have hit its critical oil exports and left it blackballed from key international banking networks.

Ahmadinejad said he had no knowledge of the whereabouts of Robert Levinson, a private investigator and former FBI agent who vanished in Iran five years ago. He said he directed Iranian intelligence services two years ago to work with their counterparts in the U.S. to locate him.

"And if any help there is that I can bring to bear, I would be happy to do so," he said.

He also claimed never to have heard of Amir Hekmati, a former U.S. Marine who is imprisoned on espionage charges in Iran. Hekmati was arrested while visiting his grandmothers in Iran in August 2011, and his family has been using Ahmadinejad's visit to New York to plead for his release.

In spite of Ahmadinejad's assertions on the importance of dialogue and respect for others, he has presented a hard line in many areas in this week's media appearances.

He refuses to speak of the state of Israel by name and instead refers only to the "Zionists." And when asked on Monday about author Salman Rushdie, he made no attempt to distance himself from recent renewed threats on the author's life emanating from an Iranian semi-official religious foundation.

"If he is in the U.S.," said the president of Iran, "you should not broadcast it for his own safety."

Greek government sees first big anti-austerity strike

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek police fired teargas at hooded youths hurling petrol bombs and stones as tens of thousands took to the streets in Greece's biggest anti-austerity demonstration in months on Wednesday.

The clashes occurred after more than 50,000 people marched to parliament chanting "We won't submit to the troika (of lenders)" and "EU, IMF Out!" on a day of strikes against a new round of cuts demanded by EU and IMF lenders.

As the rally ended, dozens of black-clad youth threw stones, petrol bombs and bottles at riot police, who responded with several rounds of teargas. Police chased the protesters through Syntagma square in front of parliament as helicopters clattered overhead. Smoke rose from a small blaze in a corner.

The strikes, called by the country's two biggest unions representing half the four-million-strong work force, is shaping up to be the first test of whether Prime Minister Antonis Samaras can stand his ground.

Police officials estimated the demonstration was the largest since a May 2011 protest, and among the biggest since Greece first resorted to aid from international lenders in 2010.

"We can't take it anymore - we are bleeding. We can't raise our children like this," said Dina Kokou, a 54-year-old teacher and mother of four who lives on 1,000 euros a month.

"These tax hikes and wage cuts are killing us."

The traditional summer break has allowed the fragile conservative-led coalition to enjoy relative calm on the streets since narrowly coming to power on a pro-euro, pro-bailout platform, but unions predict an end to the lull.

"Yesterday the Spaniards took to the streets, today it's us, tomorrow the Italians and the day after - all the people of Europe," Yiorgos Harisis, a unionist from the ADEDY public sector group told demonstrators.

"With this strike we are sending a strong message to the government and the troika that the measures will not pass even if voted in parliament, because the government's days are numbered."

About 3,000 police - twice the number usually deployed - stood guard in the centre of Athens, which last saw serious violence in February when protesters set shops and banks ablaze as parliament approved an austerity bill.

Police formed a barricade outside parliament, and officers blocked a pensioner who tried to move towards Samaras's office holding a banner with pictures of Greek prime ministers under the title: "The biggest traitors in Greek history".

Ships stayed docked, museums and monuments were shut to visitors and air traffic controllers walked off the job for a three-hour stoppage.

"DESTROYING OUR LIVES"

Much of the union anger is directed at spending cuts worth nearly 12 billion euros ($15.55 billion) over the next two years that Greece has promised the European Union and International Monetary Fund in an effort to secure its next tranche of aid.

The bulk of those cuts is expected from cutting wages, pensions and welfare benefits, heaping a new wave of misery on Greeks who say repeated rounds of austerity have pushed them to the brink and failed to transform the country for the better.

"We can't just sit by idly and do nothing while the troika and the government destroy our lives," said Dimitra Kontouli, a 49-year-old local government employee whose salary was cut to 1,100 euros a month from 1,600 euros previously.

"My husband has lost his job, we just can't make ends meet."

A survey by the MRB polling agency last week showed that more than 90 percent of Greeks believe the planned cuts are unfair and burden the poor, with the vast majority expecting more austerity in coming years.

Unions argue that Greece should remain in the euro but default on part of its debt and ditch the current recipe of austerity cuts in favor of higher taxes on the rich and efforts to nab wealthy tax evaders.

But with Greece facing certain bankruptcy and a potential euro zone exit without further aid, Samaras's government has little choice but to push through the measures, which have also exposed fissures in his coalition.

With Greece in its fifth year of recession, analysts say patience is wearing thin and a strong public backlash could tear apart the conservative-led government.

"What people want to tell Samaras is that they are hurt and Samaras could use this to demand concessions from the troika," MRB polling director Dimitris Mavros said.

"The people are willing to give the government time, but on certain conditions like cracking down on tax evasion and securing a bailout extension. If the government succeeds in that, its life will also be extended."

Tips To Get The Best Deal On Home Improvement | Exact Article

If you really find this article helpful Give it a PLUS from below and help us to spread it.

Since it involves making your home the way you want it, home improvements are vital. You have to research first so you avoid wasting a lot of money or possibly doing harm to yourself or your family. There are some effective thoughts in this article to help you start.

Are you contemplating selling your home? Many home improvement projects are simple affairs, and can dramatically add value to your home?s price. One very simple home improvement that adds value to your home is replacing ancient kitchen appliances with new ones.

For some fun wall stencil designs, pick a design you delight in by either finding and printing it from the Internet or making your own. Have a few copies of the pattern laminated at a copy store, and cut out the patterns using a craft knife. Use painter?s tape to place the stencil against the wall, then roll on the paint of your choice. Next, place the new stencil underneath the ancient stencil, alternating as you go around your room.

Use a excellent primer for your wall before painting if it was painted first with a glossy or oil-based paint. It will help the paint stick to the wall and keep it from peeling. Priming is essential when you are painting over a dark color with a lighter one, because you will not need to apply so many coats.

Find out how you are plotting to remove the debris from the area. Any kind of renovation makes debris, especially if demolition is involved; the debris can be an eyesore and get in the way of your work if you aren?t sure how you will get rid of it, before you start your project. Therefore, you should either borrow a friend?s large truck or rent a dumpster in order to get rid of the debris so you can resume your renovations.

Hardwood is a better investment than laminate. Laminate might look passable as real wood, but it can?t be refinished. This means they?ll have to be completely redone if a new look is desired.

Change the look of your bathroom by installing a new wallpaper border or adding some new artwork into the decor. Wallpaper trim doesn?t cost much and comes in such a fantastic variety of designs that will complement any color and style of decor imaginable. Border trim is also quite simple to place into place. With a small artwork that is simple, yet affordable and elegant, you can turn the look of your bathroom upside down.

Natural building materials are strongly preferred for interior home renovation projects. Natural materials such as wood, ceramic or stone are nearly always superior to synthetic alternatives. They are more durable and attractive than man-made alternatives. More expensive natural materials can be cheaper in the long run because synthetics will have to be replaced more frequently.

Be mindful of weather conditions. If it rains a lot in your area, installing a patio outdoors may not be the best investment. Patio covering and equipment to break the wind might help, but if you don?t want the extras it might be wise to skip that thought.

As stated earlier, just having a few tips under your belt can help you improve your home?s market value within a reasonable budget. If you choose to sell, you can make your house stand out by making the right improvements.

Alaska World Affairs Council: Stories of Struggle, Stories of Hope: Art ...

A topic that is not often discussed at the Alaska World Affairs Council?s typical events is that of our common humanity. What, though, is more worldly and more related to our international relationships than that which unites us? In his TED Talk (which can be viewed below), Chris Abani discusses what makes up our humanity, and how the people he has known in his life have taught him the importance of the human relationship.

?

Chris Abani is a Nigerian poet and novelist. As a young man, Abani wrote a spy novel about a foiled coup that incidentally mirrored a real-life attempted coup against the Nigerian government. Accused of laying out the blueprint for the attempted coup, Abani was imprisoned in Nigeria at the age of 18. Although he was released, he was later arrested and tortured twice more. Abani directs his experiences into his writing, resulting in ?searing poetry? and poignant novels, all the while maintaining an optimistic view on life.

During his lecture on October 5th, which is sponsored by UAA Student Activities, Chris Abani will be discussing human stories of struggle and hope, and how art, politics, and human rights intertwine. The lecture will be held on at 7:30 p.m. in the UAA Student Union Den. Admission is free for all, and there is no need to RSVP.

Toca Band iPad app review

Toca Boca makes delightful apps for children. The lastest, Toca Band, is no exception. The app features a range of cartoon characters, each of which sings part of a song. Some of them sing parts of the vocals, for example, while others handle bass or percussion.

By placing them in different positions on stage it's possible to create very different pieces of music. The higher up the stage you place a character, the more active they are in the song. That means you can create something very beat-driven by placing the percussion high up, or remove the percussion entirely and have something more relaxed.

At the top, in the centre, is a star stage. Put a character on here and you will be able to improvise with them, adding your own style to the song.

As always, the animation and artwork is enjoyably silly and the app follows Toca Boca's usual model of providing an open-ended toy that children can play with in their own way. Younger children will simply enjoy dragging the characters on and off the stage, while older children will be able to spend more time creating exactly the song they want.

The downside is that there is just one song. This lack of variety won't bother small children, who will happily play for hours, but it might start to drive parents to distraction well before then.

Frustration and turmoil as world leaders meet

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Democratic uprisings across the Arab world and the Palestinians' bid for U.N. membership sparked excitement and hope at last year's meeting of world leaders. But with war raging in Syria, the Palestinian application sidelined, and deadly protests generated by an anti-Islamic video, the mood as this year's U.N. gathering begins is one of disappointment and frustration.

More than 120 presidents, prime ministers and monarchs meeting this week under heavy security at the U.N. General Assembly and in sideline events will also be preoccupied by rising tension over Iran's nuclear program and the possibility of an Israeli strike against Tehran's nuclear facilities, al-Qaida's inroads in the Sahel region of west Africa, especially in Mali, and the first decline in years in international aid to help developing countries combat poverty.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon predicted that the ministerial session, which starts Tuesday, will be among the busiest ever, reflecting "the tumultuous time in which we live ? a time of turmoil and transition." It is also taking place "against a backdrop of widespread violence linked to intolerance," he said.

Ahead of the opening ministerial session, which President Barack Obama will address, the U.N. chief has invited leaders to the first high-level meeting on the rule of law on Monday, hoping they "will send a strong signal to the world's people that they are serious about establishing well-functioning institutions and delivering justice."

Diplomats aren't expecting any breakthroughs on the deadlock over Syria, which Ban said "will be foremost in our minds," despite a number of sideline meetings starting Monday when the new U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi briefs the U.N. Security Council behind closed doors on his recent talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad and other leaders in the region.

The Syrian conflict has bitterly divided the most powerful members of the Security Council, paralyzing the only U.N. body that can impose global sanctions and authorize military action. Russia, Syria's key protector, and China, have vetoed three Western-backed resolutions aimed at pressuring Assad to stop the violence and start political talks with opponents of his family's 40-year dictatorship who began demonstrating against his regime 18 months ago.

Germany's U.N. Ambassador Peter Wittig, the current Security Council president, said "change in the Arab world" will be uppermost in the minds of the leaders ? as was the case at last year's session.

Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi, an Islamist who was sworn in on June 30 after the first democratic elections in the country's modern history, will be addressing the 193-member assembly for the first time on Wednesday. So too will Yemen's President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who took office in February following more than a year of political turmoil and is now trying to steer the country's transition to democracy.

Last year, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas stole the spotlight with his submission of an application for Palestine to become the 194th member state of the United Nations. The United States, Israel's closest ally, made clear that it would veto any application until the Palestinians and Israelis negotiate an end to their decades-long conflict.

So Abbas is expected to come to the General Assembly on Thursday with a more modest proposal ? to upgrade Palestine's current status as a U.N. observer to a non-member observer state ? but likely putting off the date for submission of a resolution to the assembly, where there are no vetoes, until after the U.S. presidential election in November.

The Palestinians expect overwhelming support from the assembly for the enhanced U.N. status, which they hope will give broad international legitimacy to the pre-1967 lines as Palestine's border and grant them access to U.N. agencies and possibly the International Criminal Court.

With no sign of an end to the Security Council's paralysis over Syria, Wittig said Germany chose to focus the council's ministerial session Wednesday on something new and positive in the Mideast ? "the emergence of the Arab League as a regional actor that has proved to be essential for conflict resolution."

The 21-member Arab League has shaken off decades of near total submission to the will of the region's leaders and is seeking to transform itself following the seismic changes brought about by the Arab Spring. The league has supported the rebels who ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and suspended Syria in response to Assad's brutal crackdown against his opponents.

"This organization is promoting the values that the United Nations is standing for ? human rights, rule of law, democracy, pluralism," the fight against corruption and promoting economic opportunity, Wittig said.

Another issue looming large over the ministerial session is Iran's nuclear program, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convinced that the Iranians are close to developing a nuclear weapon ? which Tehran vehemently denies.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who will step down next year, makes his final speech to the General Assembly on Wednesday. Netanyahu speaks on Thursday, before a closed-door meeting of senior diplomats, and possibly ministers, from the six countries trying to rein in Iran's nuclear ambitions ? the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.

Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, said the U.S.-produced film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad will be at the top of the agenda of a ministerial meeting of its 57 members on the sidelines of the assembly. He said the international community needs to unite behind action to implement international law which warns against any advocacy of religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, aggression or violence.

There will also be sessions to promote the achievement of U.N. anti-poverty goals by 2015, sustainable energy and an end to polio.

Experience The Unforgettable And Remarkable Safari Holidays In ...

Kenya is considered the safari capital of the world. It is the land of unspoiled natural beauty. It is a destination that allows you to see an enormous variety of landscapes, each with a different flora and fauna.

Kenya is a beautiful country, which is located in the eastern part of the African continent. Numerous books have been written about the nature, fascinating life and history of this scenic country. There are lots of things to say about Kenya like its rich culture, many various tribes who live here and the huge variety of landscapes along with the incredible natural beauty and wildlife. The best time to visit this country is June to enjoy the amazing weather. Even if the temperatures hovered at about 15 degree Celsius, you will enjoy lots of sunshine. However, it feels a lot colder because the constant winds are bone-chilling. You will find that it can get freezing in the early mornings and late nights. Therefore, it is advised to pack a puffer jacket and heat packs. Moreover, the roads can also get dusty; thus, better wear your largest goggle-like wraparound shades. This becomes all the more important for people, who have sensitive eyes.

Some people pack lots of cookies and instant noodles on their trip to Kenya, because they are afraid that they would be having just meat in the country. Other may also have some dietary misconceptions. However, the reality is something else. You will be surprised to know that game meat is banned in the country and the Kenyan farms supply the freshest, as well as, pesticide-free and truly organic potatoes, bananas, tomatoes and veggies. Anyone, who visit Kenya, must try the super-sweet grilled mini potatoes, the cleverest beetroot-and-pineapple salads and the sauted steamed bananas (which are almost like extremely sweet goreng pisang but healthier).

The Kenyans, particularly those living in the more idyllic and rustic Mount Kenyan region, are approachable and friendly. The Kenyans are very beautiful people the way they wear their bright and colourful clothes. You must not miss the safari drive as you may spot the most graceful giraffes on heir way to the water hole for their morning drink. If you are the lucky one, you will also see baboons, doe-eyed deer, and the odd hard-to-spot, majestic lion lounging around.

As far as the accommodation is concerned, Ngong House is an ideal resort. It is a private, serene and luxurious home stay located in Karen/Langata area of Nairobi. This resort provides different types of accommodation. The accommodation is basically in luxurious Tree-houses, which are designed with extreme comfort in mind. You will surprised to see that every unit is different in design. Some units have 2 levels with bedrooms upstairs, while the living areas are on the lower floor, which is raised 15 ft from the ground for gaining an uninterrupted sight of the Ngong Hills over unspoiled bush.

Suu Kyi: 'I just didn't know how to give up'

Aung San Suu Kyi shares her message for people around the world struggling for freedom and democracy. NBC's Ann Curry reports.

Ann Curry, NBC News Special Correspondent

NEW YORK ? Myanmar?s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was one of the world's most famous political prisoners until her release two years ago.

After 15 years under house arrest, NBC News? Ann Curry asked her Friday what her message is to other people all over the world struggling for freedom?

?It's the same struggle for everybody everywhere; because unless we are free we can't really realize our own potential. And if we can't realize our own potential we are like a crippled tree. It would be a stunted growth,? Suu Kyi replied. ?

Now on a 17-day coast-to-coast tour of the United States, earlier this week Suu Kyi met President Barack Obama at the White House and received the Congressional Gold Medal for her long fight for democracy in a country ruled by army generals since 1962.

She sat down with Curry on Friday morning and discussed her emergence from house arrest, her new political role in Myanmar and what kept her going all those years.

'I just didn't know how to give up'
During her years under house arrest in the country also known as Burma, Suu Kyi was separated from her family, and unable to see her husband, British academic Michael Aris, before his death from cancer in 1999. Suu Kyi was released in late 2010 and has since joined hands with members of the former ruling junta that detained her to push ahead with political reform.

Myanmar opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has been presented with Congress' highest award, the Congressional Gold Medal in honor of her leadership and commitment to human rights in Burma.

Curry asked her what sustained her over all those years?

?Well, I just didn't know how to give up,? Suu Kyi said with a smile. ?I never thought of needing anything to sustain me. It never occurred to me that I should give up.?

?Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi calls for release of Russian punk band Pussy Riot

She also credited the perseverance she learned as a child from her mother and father, Aung San, a Burmese independence hero and founder of the modern Burmese army.

?I was brought up by my mother very strictly,? she said. ?She always spoke about the importance of a sense of duty and if you take up something you just don't drop it.?

She said she also felt an obligation to see her father?s dream of an independent country come true.

??My mother always brought me up to understand that my father loved his country and of course I always knew that he didn't live to see his dream come true. He died just before we regained independence. And I suppose always I wanted to realize his dream for him.?

Suu Kyi honored with Congress' highest award

MSNBC host Alex Wagner moderates a town hall with Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and Amnesty International live from the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

Possible presidential run?
Suu Kyi won the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize for championing democracy in opposition to the military junta that held her under house arrest for years.?

Suu Kyi's election to parliament in April helped to transform the pariah image of Myanmar and persuade the West to begin rolling back sanctions after a year of dramatic reforms, including the release of about 700 political prisoners.

As for her house arrest, she said she learned at least one important skill during that time: how to listen.

?I learned to listen very well because I listened to the radio about five, six hours a day. And this ability to listen has stayed me- has stood me in very good stead,? she said. ?It helps you to understand how people's minds work. How other people think. What their point of view is.?

Ease sanctions on Myanmar, Suu Kyi says on U.S. tour

She is confident in her country?s future ? but did not rule out the possibility of ever running for president of Myanmar.

?No, if you're a politician you never rule out such a possibility,? she said.

Suu Kyi is currently in New York, where 40 years ago she worked for the United Nations. She'll then travel to Kentucky, Indiana and California to speak on campuses and meet Burmese expatriates.

Green Blog: Greenland's 'Ice Quakes' May Set a Record

One of the more amazing facts about the ongoing destruction of the Greenland ice sheet is that it is producing earthquakes that can be detected worldwide. Now, fresh evidence is at hand to show that these ?ice quakes? are spreading to previously quiescent parts of Greenland. We?re only in September, but it seems increasingly likely that 2012 will set a record for such quakes.

Some readers may remember my article from 2010 about the acceleration of Greenland?s outlet glaciers, which carry ice from the middle of the great ice sheet and dump it into the sea. Their speedup, in fits and starts over the past decade, has coincided with a lot of other evidence that the ice sheet is deteriorating at an accelerating clip.

And it is the calving of huge icebergs from these sped-up glaciers that is producing the earthquakes. They are many times weaker than, say, the earthquake off the coast of Japan last year, but they are strong enough to be detected by the worldwide network of seismometers.

One of the scientists I quoted two years ago was Meredith Nettles, a seismologist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, a unit of Columbia University that is just outside New York City. With her colleagues Goran Ekstrom and Geoffrey A. Abers, she discovered the glacial earthquakes in 2003.

Now, with a student collaborator, Stephen Veitch, she has produced an update of the earthquake situation. Their paper, recently accepted for publication in the Journal of Geophysical Research, shows that earthquakes have been spreading northward, from the warmer southern parts of Greenland to the colder northern parts. (A synopsis of the paper is available here, and for those with access to the journal, the full preprinted version can be found here.)

Dr. Nettles and Mr. Veitch show that, after becoming more active earlier in the decade, some of the southerly glaciers have quieted down to a degree. That is consistent with other science on the behavior of Greenland glaciers, showing that they can speed up and start dumping more ice into the ocean, apparently in response to melting near their fronts caused by warmer ocean water.

But that breakneck pace is usually not maintained for many years. They tend to slow down again, though rarely back to their starting speed.

The striking thing about this paper is the evidence that glacial earthquakes, and the ice loss they represent, have spread to one of the coldest parts of Greenland, in the far northwest. From 2000 to 2010, 66 glacial earthquakes occurred at northwestern glaciers that in previous decades had produced virtually none. The paper describes this as ?a major expansion in the number of glaciers producing glacial earthquakes and the geographic range of those glaciers.?

While the analysis in the paper stops in 2010, Dr. Nettles is keeping count, and she sent me the plot above, showing that for all of Greenland, 2011 had the second-highest number of glacial earthquakes, after the record year of 2005. And, as is obvious from the graph, it now seems quite likely that 2012 will surpass the 2005 record.

Coupled with recent news about the loss of Arctic sea ice and the possible long-term effect that will have on the Greenland ice sheet, this paper is a sobering reminder that all is not well in the Arctic region.

Sudan hopeful for South Sudan deal despite fresh fighting

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Sudan hopes to reach a broad agreement with South Sudan to end all hostilities at a presidents' summit in Ethiopia at the weekend, officials said on Thursday, despite new fighting between the army and rebels in Sudan's borderlands.

Diplomats said there has been progress after two weeks of African Union-brokered talks between the neighboring countries, but no breakthrough yet on setting up a demilitarized buffer zone at the unmarked border, much of which is disputed.

Western and African diplomats hope to conclude negotiations at the weekend with a summit on Sunday between Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and his southern counterpart, Salva Kiir.

"I believe Bashir and Salva Kiir will be here to achieve something for the people of their countries ... We hope they will succeed and sign an agreement," Abdelrahman Sir al-Khatim, a senior member of Sudan's delegation, told reporters on the sidelines of the talks.

Last month, Sudan and South Sudan reached an interim deal to restart southern oil exports through the north but Sudan insists on a border security deal first, which both parties are trying to hammer out at this latest round of negotiations.

Unless the two countries reach a comprehensive peace deal by a September 22 deadline, they risk incurring sanctions from the United Nations Security Council.

The African neighbors came close to war in April in the worst outbreak of violence since South Sudan seceded from Sudan in July 2011 under a peace deal that ended decades of civil war.

Sudan would only sign a deal that covers all issues left over from South Sudan's secession such as oil transit fees and border security, said Khatim, who is Sudan's ambassador in Ethiopia.

South Sudan says Kiir's attendance will be only confirmed if there is a breakthrough at the security talks, but diplomats say the president will find it hard not to show up after he was officially invited by Ethiopia.

NEW FIGHTING

Fighting continued in the border area on Wednesday. Sudan's army said it had clashed with rebels in Blue Nile state and seized the area of Sarkam close to the border to South Sudan.

Sudan accuses South Sudan of supporting rebels of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-North) which has been fighting the army in Blue Nile and nearby South Kordofan state for more than a year. Both states border South Sudan.

"After the operation the armed forces started securing the area and cleansed it on a large scale," army spokesman al-Sawarmi Khalid told the state-linked Sudanese Media Center (SMC) late on Wednesday.

SPLM-North spokesman Arnu Lodi could not confirm the fighting. South Sudan officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Leaders of SPLM-North are also negotiating with Sudan in non-direct talks in Ethiopia over a political solution in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, but diplomats see no real progress.

Kamal Obeid, head of Sudan's delegation dealing with SPLM-North, said talks were ongoing, adding Sudan still insisted that South Sudan cut any ties with the SPLM-North.

Juba denies any links with the group, which is in alliance with rebel operations from Sudan's western Darfur region which want to topple Bashir.

The United Nations, African Union and Arab League brokered a deal between Sudan and SPLM-North last month to allow much-needed aid into rebel-held areas in both states. Fighting has displaced more than 600,000 people in both states.

But the agreement has not been implemented yet as Sudan and the U.N. have been unable to agree on how to deliver aid.
