HTC Windows Phone 8S hits the FCC with North American 3G, gives the US a horrible tease

Unlike Nokia, all of HTC's Windows Phone effort in the US this fall has been centered on the high-end, through the Windows Phone 8X. That makes the FCC appearance of its budget cousin, the 8S, borderline cruel for American fans of HTC's hyper-colorized design. The phone getting clearance has support for both AT&T and T-Mobile HSPA bands without the LTE that either American carrier would want. Given that the 8S is officially destined for Canada (and not the US) without a named carrier, we're most likely looking at an example for a budget Canuck provider such as Mobilicity or Wind. At least the frequencies will be a comfort to gray market US importers who want HTC's Windows Phone aesthetic on the cheap.

World stocks mixed before US vote, China congress

BANGKOK (AP) ? World stock markets were mixed Tuesday as traders refrained from major steps ahead of the U.S. presidential election and a leadership change in China.

Asian stocks meandered while European stocks edged higher just hours before voting booths opened across the United States. The race between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney is virtually tied, generating uncertainty that stock markets loathe.

European stocks rose in early trading. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.2 percent to 5,850.65. Germany's DAX was marginally higher at 7,329.82. France's CAC-40 added 0.1 percent to 3,452.93.

Wall Street was poised to eke out small gains. Dow futures were up 0.1 percent at 13,071 and S&P 500 futures added 0.1 percent to 1,413.90.

A key political event also takes place this week in China. Thursday marks the opening of the Communist Party congress ? the once-in-a-decade forum used to name China's top leadership.

There isn't any mystery about China's next leader. Succession plans call for Vice President Xi Jinping to lead the party for the next decade. But markets will be closely watching the congress for hints on how the new leadership plans to tackle a stubborn economic slowdown in the world's No. 2 economy.

"Market participants will be distracted by today's US Presidential elections and Thursday's transfer of leadership in China," said analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong in a market commentary.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.4 percent to close at 8,975.15. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.3 percent to 21,944.43. Benchmarks in Thailand and Singapore fell. Mainland Chinese shares also closed lower. The Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.4 percent to 2,106 and the Shenzhen Composite Index shed 0.6 percent to 853.33.

South Korea's Kospi rose 1.1 percent to 1,928.17. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added 0.2 percent to 4,484.80. Benchmarks in Taiwan, the Philippines and Indonesia also rose.

Investors also were looking ahead to Friday, when China releases a slew of economic data, including retail sales, industrial production and the country's consumer and producer price indexes.

The Hong Kong market is pulling back ahead of the release of data that investors hope will show China's slowdown on the verge of a reversal, said Linus Yip, a strategist at First Shanghai Securities in Hong Kong.

"We are waiting for more evidence showing whether mainland China is bottoming out or not," he said.

Among individual stocks, Hong Kong-listed luggage maker Samsonite International fell 8.4 percent. The luggage maker reported net sales for the third-quarter rose 12.7 percent, excluding foreign currency effects, compared to a year earlier. But analysts at HSBC Global Research said sales were lower than expected.

Hyundai Motor Corp. rose 4.3 percent, recovering some of the ground lost Monday after the U.S. government said the South Korean carmaker exaggerated the fuel efficiency of hundreds of thousands of cars.

There was only one major economic report in the U.S. on Monday, a measure of activity among so-called service companies, which employ about 90 percent of the American workforce. The Institute for Supply Management's services sector index showed growth in October, but at a slower pace than in September, and just short of what economists expected.

Benchmark crude for December delivery was down 7 cents to $85.58 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 79 cents to close at $85.65 on the Nymex on Monday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2772 from $1.2792. The dollar fell to 80.17 yen from 80.26 yen.

Harvest Moon Roleplay? (Group)

It all started with a farm.

After a factory accident, a man named Terrence Miles decided that he had quite enough of the big city. With that thought in mind, he moved his family out to the countryside. Following in his great-grandfather's footsteps, he started the Lucky Dice Farm (Yes, he was a gambler). For a few harvests, things were tough. It was just him and his wife, his two sons and his daughter, working the farm, traveling back and forth to the city, and running everything.

After a few seasons, a trading post opened. Now that other people did the trading and shipping, the farm got even more prosperous. The farm was able to just focus on producing crops,and as such, it made a surplus. A tavern/inn was built nearby, so the traders had a place to stay and three hot meals a day.

Each new addition to the town built upon the success of the farm, which built on the success of the town. The town started to appear on maps, marked as Everdale (named so for the Evergreen trees that covered the surrounding area.) This was the definition of "bustling rural town". For many generations, the town thrived.

However, roughly twenty years ago, Maxwell Miles' (Great-great-grandson of Terrence Miles) wife came down with an illness that the town doctor couldn't figure out. With a heavy heart, he closed his father's farm for the year, so his wife could get better. They then left for the city, which was bound to have a doctor who could help. They swore that they would be back as soon as she was better.

They never returned.

The town kept going for a while, but the farm was the central economic power for the town. With it shut down, the town started to die. People moved away. The trading post shut down. The supermarket became poor and only sold what the citizens needed. The tavern shut down. And soon the town was empty, save the few old people who had clung to hope that the town would be restored.

Again, that was twenty years ago. But perhaps it's time that Everdale rises from the ashes. After all, someone just bought the once proud farm. They'll have their work cut out for them if they want to bring it back...

Hello! This is a Harvest Moon roleplay, as you've noticed. Basically just a slice-of-life sort of thing, it will, in the spirit of Harvest Moon, have romantic interests, friends, enemies, weddings - what you will. This is not my idea nor is it the first recreation of it, but I haven't see it on this site and I've been craving a Harvest Moon roleplay for quite a while. You don't even have to have played any of the games - you just have to know the general idea (i.e. Harvest Goddess, etc)

I'm hoping there will be at least five people expressing interest in it. If so, I'll get a proper OOC up and attempt to rally a Co-Mod into submission. I haven't anyone in mind as of yet. 'Vatileaks' case: Computer expert's trial opens

Pope Benedict's former butler, who was convicted of stealing papal documents, ?had not allowed technicians to check his computer for the last six years, a court trying a second suspect in the Vatican leaks scandal heard on Monday.

The detail was made public at the first hearing in the trial of Claudio Sciarpelletti, a computer expert who is charged with aiding and abetting Paolo Gabriele, the former butler.

The courtroom inside a Renaissance building was so small it could barely hold the three judges, the five witnesses, the defendant and a selected pool of journalists chosen among the international media. Cameras were not allowed inside the courtroom.

No picture has ever been released of the computer expert, so the quasi-mystery over his identity remains, in good old secretive Vatican style.

The leaks scandal unleashed one of the biggest crises of Pope Benedict's papacy, embarrassing the Vatican at a time when it was struggling to overcome several child sex abuse scandals involving clerics, as well as mismanagement at its bank.

Gabriele was convicted of aggravated theft at a separate trial last month and sentenced to 18 months in jail for stealing sensitive papal documents and leaking them to the media. He kept some confidential information on his computer.

One of the pope's closest household assistants, Gabriele admitted leaking the documents in what he said was an attempt to help disclose corruption and "evil" in the headquarters of the 1.2 billion-member faith.

The former butler attended the opening of Monday's trial for a few minutes but was then ushered out along with other witnesses. He looked calm and was smiling but did not look at Sciarpelletti. Gabriele was wearing the grey suit he sported during his trial, and appeared to be in good spirits despite having been locked for days in a tiny cell in the Vatican Gendarmerie headquarters.

And yet the pope's former butler has all the reason to worry. While it was widely expected that the pope would pardon him following his conviction, he hasn't yet done so. Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said in October that the pardon was still a possibility, but it would require Gabriele's repentance and a sincere request for pardon to the pontiff and the others affected by his actions.

Gianluca Benedetti, Sciarpelletti's lawyer, said Gabriele's work computer had become "obsolete" and was one of the oldest in the Vatican but that he had refused to allow Sciarpelletti, 48, to touch it.

Sciarpelletti and Gabriele could not therefore have been great friends, much less accomplices, he argued, if Gabriele had not even trusted him to look at his computer.

"Do you think my client would have risked a record that included 20 years of faithful service in the Vatican to help someone who was not even a great friend?" Benedetti asked the court. The court allowed Sciarpelleti's employment record to be entered as evidence.

Sciarpelletti fidgeted nervously during the two-hour hearing, often rubbing his hands and looking at the floor.

Pawns in a bigger game?
While the Vatican has said that Sciarpelletti's role in the whole affair was "minor," excitement grew over the possibility that his trial could reveal whether more people were involved in the leaking of the documents. It also provided the former butler with the opportunity to testify once again, the first time he would comment on the scandal since his conviction.

The pope's once-trusted butler, Paulo Gabriele, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for his part in leaking private Vatican documents. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

But when reports from inside the courtroom emerged after only two hours from the start of the hearing, it became clear that Monday's proceedings were only a formality.

Many Vatican watchers are skeptical that Gabriele could have acted alone, suggesting he may have been forced to take the blame in order to shield bigger players inside the Holy See. They say both men could be pawns in a palace power struggle.

Vatican officials say Sciarpelletti's role in the leaks scandal was marginal and expect the trial, which is being held in the same small courtroom, to be speedier than that of the butler, which lasted only four sessions.

After preliminary arguments, Sciarpelletti's trial was adjourned to allow the defense team to study the minutes of the Gabriele trial.

Sciarpelletti spent one night in a Vatican jail cell on May 25, two days after Gabriele was arrested when police searched the ex-butler's home and found many copies of papal documents, some alleging infighting in the papal court and corruption at the highest levels of the Roman Catholic Church.

When Vatican police searched Sciarpelletti's desk in the Secretariat of State - the nerve center of the Holy See's administration - they found a closed envelope addressed to Gabriele marked "personal."

It contained documentation relating to a chapter in a book about Vatican corruption and intrigue written by Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, who had received confidential documents from Gabriele.

Sciapelletti's lawyer told the court on Monday that the search was carried out after Vatican police received an anonymous note from someone in the Secretariat of State saying that Sciapelletti and Gabriele had often been seen together.

In four sessions of questioning in May and June, Sciarpelletti provided "wavering and contradictory" answers, according to a court indictment.

On the night of his arrest, Sciarpelletti said he only had a "working relationship" with Gabriele. But he later said the two were friends and that their families had gone on outings together and that he knew Gabriele's childhood had been tough.

Sciarpelletti initially said Gabriele had given him the envelope. But he later said it had been given to him by someone in the Vatican identified only as "W" in court documents, only to change his story again later and say it had been given to him by someone identified as "X."

It is not clear if "X" or "W" are clerics or lay people working in the Vatican.

Apart from Gabriele, other witnesses who will be called to testify include Monsignor Carlo Polvani, Sciarpelletti's superior in the Secretariat of State; Maj. William Kloter, the deputy commander of the Swiss Guards; and two Vatican security officials, including the commander of the police force, Domenico Giani.

Sciarpelletti faces up to one year in jail but is expected to get off with a light sentence or a fine.

The next, and possibly final hearing is scheduled for Saturday.?

James Buckley & Clair Meek Tie the Knot in Scottish-Themed Wedding

In a beautiful traditional Scottish ceremony, James Buckley married Clair Meek at Dundas Castle near Edinburgh on Saturday (November 3).

The 25-year-old British actor wore a green and black traditional tartan kilt while his blushing bride wore a lovely lace vintage gown.

Congratulating the happy couple via Twitter was actor Danny Dyer who tweeted a photo of the two at the wedding with the comment, "A lovely cute couple.I wish @RealJBuckley & the lovely @Clair_Meek all the best.I almost wanna get married. (almost)."

Though this isn't the first time the couple has made a long term commitment, their son Harrison was born in October 2011.

CAIRO - Egypt's Coptic Orthodox church chose a new pope, Bishop Tawadros, in a sumptuous service on Sunday that Christians hope will lead them through an Islamist-dominated landscape and protect what is the Middle East's biggest Christian community.

Many Christians in Egypt, who make up about a tenth of the population of 83 million, are worried about political gains made by Islamists since Hosni Mubarak was ousted last year. They have long complained of discrimination in Muslim-majority Egypt.

In a ritual steeped in tradition and filled with prayer, chants and incense at Abbasiya cathedral in Cairo, the names of three candidates chosen in an earlier vote were placed in a wax-sealed bowl before a blindfolded boy picked out one name.

Copts believe this long-established process ensured worldly influences did not determine the successor to Pope Shenouda III, who led the church for four decades until his death in March at the age of 88.

"Pope Tawadros II is the 118th (leader of the church), blessed congratulations to you," said interim Pope Bakhomious, dressed in gold-embroidered robes, who has temporarily been in the post since Shenouda's death.

As he held the name aloft, the congregation in the packed cathedral applauded. The formal ceremony to install Bishop Tawadros as the pope will take place on November 18, a priest said.

The new pope, bishop of a region in the Nile Delta north of Cairo who clerics said turned 61 on Sunday, had trained as a pharmacist before joining the priesthood.

Church experts said he had strong communication skills and had called for peaceful co-existence in Egyptian society.

"I am so happy. I have had dealings with Bishop Tawadros before and he is a very wise and calm man," said 20-year-old Marina Nabil, speaking amid applause in the cathedral.

The other two candidates were Bishop Rafael, a 54-year-old who qualified as a doctor before entering the priesthood, and Father Rafael Afamena, a 70-year-old monk who studied law before taking on holy orders.

In a ballot last week the candidates were whittled down to a choice of three. Voters included leading members of the church, public figures and a handful of representatives of the Ethiopian Church, which has historic links to the church in Egypt.

Echoing the worries of many of Egypt's Copts, shopkeeper Michael George said before the service: "Christians fear the Islamists' rule especially because their presence is encouraging radicals to act freely."

Since Mubarak was ousted, there have been several attacks on churches by radical Islamists. Those incidents have fuelled longstanding complaints that Christians are sidelined in the workplace and in law. They point to rules that make it harder to obtain official permission to build a church than a mosque.

The Muslim Brotherhood, the mainstream Islamist movement from which President Mohamed Mursi emerged to win power via free elections, has sworn to guard the rights of Christians in the overwhelmingly majority Sunni Muslim nation.

The Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party congratulated the church. The party chief, Saad al-Katatni, said on his Facebook page that he was "optimistic about fruitful cooperation with (the pope) as spiritual leader of Coptic brethren."
